When You Endure Suffering

The start of our brand new sermon series: "Out of Context", we're learning the true meaning of Romans 8:28 about God's glory through suffering.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions! 

Week 1 — Rom 8:15-31

General:

  • How has this message changed the way you view this commonly quoted verse?
  • What about Romans 8:28 most challenged you/surprised you as you listened to Pastor Chip address its context?
  • How do you think culture and context play into how/what we believe, understand and interpret things?  
  • What is the difference between understanding culture and context as we view our own life?
  • What is the Gospel to you? How have you defined it?
  • Are you ever ashamed of the Gospel?

Take Home 1: All Things? (Sufferings of this present time)

  • What sufferings are you currently going through? (i.e. heartache, sickness & disease, pain, rejection, gossip, misunderstandings, betrayal, family issues, slander, loss, tragedy, death, etc.)
  • What is your typical response when you go through suffering, injustices, or affliction?
  • How do you typically respond to suffering, injustice, or affliction around the world?
  • Do you really believe that glory follows suffering?

Take Home 2: Good?

  • What does it mean to be conformed into the image of Christ?
  • What is your typical response when you go through suffering, injustices, or affliction?
  • How do you typically respond to suffering, injustice, or affliction around the world?
  • In what ways do you see Christ being formed in you? In what areas of your life would you like to see Christ more formed in you?

Take Home 3: Perspective.

  • When we go through difficulties, how can we shift our perspective from “why” to “what”?
  • What are some things that hold you back believing that God is redeeming all the sufferings in this world for good?
  • Pastor Chip mentioned that "faith in God" gives us peace with God, access to God, and enables us to experience God. Knowing each one of these factors is important in our respective lives, which one do you hold onto the most?
