Have we misunderstood Jesus?

In week two of Revolution, Pastor Chip ties up our mini series leading up to Easter and sets up the importance of holy week.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

General:

  • The Emmaus disciples in Luke 24 were hoping that Jesus would redeem Israel. What are some things you’ve hoped God would do? How did your expectations compare to what He actually did?
  • Pastor Chip described the Biblical contrast between “This Age” (marked by suffering, exile, and bondage) and “The Age to Come” (marked by deliverance and redemption). How do you see both of these “ages” playing out in your own life or in the world around you?
  • What kind of revolution do you think the Israelites were expecting based on this message? How does this challenge our assumptions about who Jesus is and what He came to do?
  • Pastor Chip states that Jesus was killed because he didn't fit their box. In what ways are you tempted to put God in a box based on your own expectations, preferences, or cultural ideas?
  • What would it look like for you to be part of Jesus’ revolution today?

Take Home 1: In what ways have we misunderstood Jesus? (Luke 24:21; Luke 6:27-35)

  • If the Emmaus disciples misunderstood Jesus, what might that suggest about our own understanding today? Are there teachings of Jesus you’ve overlooked or misinterpreted?
  • Re-read Luke 6:27-35. What stands out to you? How do these teachings reshape our understanding of what Jesus came to do?
  • Why do you think Jesus’ message of loving enemies and doing good to those who harm you was (and still is) so revolutionary?

Take Home 2: In what ways does Jesus not fit our boxes today?

  • Pastor Chip challenged us to see Jesus not just as Savior, teacher, or healer, but as Lord. What does it practically mean for Jesus to be Lord of your life—and not just a spiritual helper?
  • Why do you call Jesus "your Lord?"
  • When it comes to marriage, finances, evangelism, and community—do we submit to Jesus’ teachings, or do we redefine them to fit our preferences or comfort zones?
  • Is living a submitted life in the Body of Christ a must or do you have other more pressing things to go on the weekends?

Take Home 3: Are we willing to allow Jesus to upset our boxes (Luke 6:46-49)

  • In Luke 6:46, Jesus asks, “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you?” What areas of your life are keeping us from following Jesus completely?
  • What might it look like to rebuild your “foundation” on what Jesus actually taught—not just what’s comfortable or familiar?
  • Are there any parts of your Christian walk that have been built more on tradition, politics, culture, or personal opinion than on the words of Jesus?
  • What’s one area this week where you can invite Jesus to “upset your box” and lead you into something deeper—even if it’s uncomfortable?
