There’s More to the Easter Story

In week one of Revolution, Pastor Chip sets the stage by unpacking the deeper significance behind the events leading up to Easter.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

General:

  • What does the word Revolution make you think of? How might Jesus’ revolution be different than other revolutions throughout history?
  • The disciples didn’t recognize Jesus walking with them in Like 24:16. Can you think of a time when Jesus was present in your life and you didn’t realize it until later?
  • In verse 21, the disciples said, “We had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel.” What kind of redemption were they hoping for? How does that compare to what Jesus actually did?
  • Why do you think Jesus was seen as a threat by religious and political leaders? What was so radical about his message?
  • Genesis 1 says we are made in the image of God. What do you think it means to be made in God’s image and called to be “vice-regents” with Him?
  • What makes it difficult for you to trust God’s leading and guidance? What keeps you clinging to your own understanding or plans?
  • Pastor Chip emphasizes that humanity keeps building cities throughout Genesis 4-11. How does this contrast with God’s original design in the garden? What are the differences between the “City of Man” and the “City of God”?
  • How does Pastor Chip’s retelling of Genesis 1–12 change or deepen your understanding of humanity’s story?
  • What is one idea or takeaway from this weekend’s message that you want to reflect on more deeply this week?

Take Home 1: How does this story speak to us today?

  • How does the story of Scripture challenge the you view the world?
  • Where do you see the contrast between the “City of Man” and the “City of God” in our culture today?
  • What does it look like to live within the City of Man while still aligning yourself with the values of the City of God? What would it look like for the “City of God” to break in?

Take Home 2: What does it mean to be the people of God?

  • How are you reflecting God’s image in your daily life—in your relationships, time, decisions, and finances?
  • In Genesis 12, Abram is called to be a blessing to the world. What does it look like for you to live as someone sent to bless others?
  • Re-read Mt. 5:16. How does Jesus’ command to “let your light shine” take on new meaning when you consider the full arc of the biblical story?

Take Home 3: Will a true hero come to make things right again?

  • What do you tend to put your hope in day to day? If someone examined your calendar or credit card statement, what would they say you hope in most?
  • What makes it difficult to hope in God’s plan when the world feels broken or chaotic?
  • What does true redemption look like in your eyes? How might Jesus’ definition of redemption surprise or challenge you?
