How do we properly receive our King?

In week one of Joy to the World, Pastor Chip kicks off the series with the story of Simeon.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

General

  • What does it mean for you personally to “receive our King” this Christmas season?
  • Simeon was described by Luke as a righteous and devout person. How do people describe you?
  • How do you think you would have responded to the words spoken by Simeon in vv. 29-32?
  • What does Simeon’s prayer/song reveal about the nature of Jesus’ mission and its impact on the world?
  • When Simeon lays eyes on Jesus, he sees who Jesus is. Who do you say Jesus is?
  • How do you properly receive Jesus in times of adversity? Do you have the eyes to see salvation or redemption from God in the midst of waiting or suffering?
  • Simeon declared that Jesus brought light to the Gentiles and glory to Israel. How can this remind us to share the joy of salvation with others?

Take Home 1: To properly receive our King, we need to rediscover the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit (Lk. 2:25-27)

  • What would it look like for a local church to be led by the Spirit? What would it look like for you to be led by the Spirit?
  • How much of your day is spent relying upon and walking in the Holy Spirit?
  • How can we become more attuned to the Spirit’s guidance in our own lives?

Take Home 2: To properly receive our King, we must learn to appreciate the discipline of waiting(Lk. 2:25)

  • Simeon waited his entire life to see the Messiah. What can we learn from his patience and trust in God’s timing?
  • How do you respond when you experience setbacks? (i.e., your attitude, heart posture, general disposition, etc.) Do you see them as setups in faith?
  • “Your talent can take you places your character can't keep you.” Do you tend to rely on your talents more than your character? Is there a tension between the two in your life?
  • What are you waiting on or waiting for in your life?

Take Home 3: To properly receive our King, we need to trust Him to fulfill the dreams and visions He has given us (Lk. 2:26)

  • What dreams and revelations has the Lord put in your heart?
  • What dreams, talents, or aspirations have you bound as dead and placed in the grave?
  • What does Simeon’s response to seeing Jesus teach us about recognizing and receiving God’s promises in our lives?
