In week three of Joy to the World, Pastor Chip continues to explore the Advent story, focusing on the powerful themes of outcasts woven into the birth of our King.
Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!
General:
Think about a moment in your life when something seemed ordinary or insignificant but later turned out to have much greater value or meaning. How does this idea challenge the way we view the Christmas story?
The shepherds were considered lowly and unimportant in society, yet they were the first to hear the good news. How does this challenge preconceived ideas we might have about who God chooses to work through?
How do the angel’s message (vv. 10-11) and the shepherds’ response challenge common biases about how God works or who He works through?
How do you typically respond to the Word of God? Thinking about how the shepherds responded in verse 15, would you say your response is more active, hung like theirs, or more passive?
The shepherds didn’t let their social status stop them from receiving the message of the Messiah. What can we learn from their example about putting aside assumptions to fully embrace God’s work?
With this sermon in mind, how do you hope this Christmas season will be different for you spiritually, relationally, or personally?
Take Home 1: To properly receive the King, we may need to put aside some preconceived notions/biases we have about God.
Take a moment to reflect. What preconceived notions do you have about God? What preconceived ideas do you have about the Christmas story?
Is it possible you might have fears about God that could be unfounded?
Could God be present and active in areas you might not think that He is?
Are there ways you’ve limited how you think God can work in your life or through others? How can you let go of those limitations?
What steps can you take this week to challenge any biases or assumptions you might have about God or His plans?
Take Home 2: To properly receive the King, we will find ourselves wanting to tell others about Him
What hinders you from telling others about what Jesus has done in your life?
How do you treat others, especially those who might be considered “unclean” or marginalized?
How do you respond to people who are not like you? What might God be telling you about how to love the “unlovable”?
Take Home 3: To properly receive the King, it is impossible to return the same way we came
Why do you think it’s impossible to encounter Jesus and remain the same?
Have you ever been changed by Jesus?
What are some areas in your life where you feel called to grow, change, or step out in faith?
What practical steps can we take to ensure that our faith doesn’t become stagnant but continues to transform us over time?
How can we, like the shepherds, glorify and praise God in our everyday lives as a reflection of our encounter with Christ?
