When Tension is Running High

In week one of Nahum, Pastor Chip reminds us that we are not in control. God is ultimately in control in our lives!

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

General:

Do you ever feel “spring-loaded-ness”? What tensions do you currently see in your life that keep you from hearing from others?

• How do you typically react to the uncertainty and evils of the world?

  • With regard to the Big Idea of this series, which is to help us as people of God learn how to react to the uncertainties of this world, how would you grade yourself at this point in your life? Why?
  • In what ways might you resemble Nahum in your own life?
  • What strikes you as interesting or noteworthy from this chapter in Nahum? Which of God's attributes stand out to you as remarkable?
  • Pastor Chip goes to great lengths to emphasize God’s sovereignty in this message. What thoughts or feelings come to you when you think about the sovereignty of God?
  • How do we balance the fact that God is sovereign and at work in ways we don't know with being the hands & feet of Christ?
  • What do you hold on to in the day of trouble? Your choices? What do you think people should do or how they should act? Do you hold onto the Lord?
  • What does surrender look like to you?
  • What area(s) in your life do you need to surrender? How can you go about giving God control of this? Who is holding you accountable?
  • Take Home 1: The people of God need constant reminders that God has already given us oracles/visions in His word, and they are for our hope and comfort (Na. 1:1)

    • In what ways has God delivered you from suffering or troubled times in the past?
    • How do you view God’s Word? Do you see His Word as a comfort?

Take Home 2: God's ways are beyond us fully and exhaustively understanding and comprehending (Na. 1:3)

    • In what ways do you try to fashion God into your own image?

    • Think back to the most recent whirlwind. How did you handle it? (Your attitude? Your thoughts? Your emotions?) • Take a moment to reflect on your life and circumstances. Where do you see a lack of trust in the Lord?

Take Home 3: There is always a temptation to attribute too much power over the world's affairs to anything other than the Lord (Na. 1:9, 12)

    • What areas of your life do you feel like you have to be in control instead of giving it to the Lord?

  • Do you find yourself in heightened anxiety when you release control over your situation?
  • How is God's Story being reflected/told in your life, or are you trying to write your own story?
  • Take Home 4: Evil will not go unchecked by the Lord of the universe (Na. 1:15)

    • Do you ever tend to tolerate evil? Do you flee or run from the face of evil?

    • “Whatever God blesses, He breaks.” What area of your life does God need to break?

    • What does telling God “Have your way” mean to you?
