How Selfishness Impacts Others

In week four of Emotional Regulation, Pastor Chip explores what it means to bear fruit and how it shapes our daily lives and impacts our mental health.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

General:

  • What do you think about self-care? Is it something you prioritize in your life? Why or why not?
  • How does the cultural view of self-care compare to what the Bible says about how we should care for ourselves?
  • Prior to this message, what did it mean to you to “walk by the Spirit”? Has your perspective changed?
  • Re-read Gal. 5:19-21. Which “works of the flesh” do you see most commonly affecting our culture or the Church? How do they impact relationships and spiritual growth?
  • Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:19-23). How can we tell when we are operating out of the flesh versus the Spirit?
  • If someone described your character, which fruit of the Spirit would they say is strongest in you? How has this fruit been evident in your life?
  • What are some practical steps you can take this week to intentionally walk in the Spirit and serve others?

Take Home 1: Walking in the Spirit is a decision every believer must make daily (Gal. 5:16,25)

  • Gal. 5:25 says, ‘If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.’ How can you practically ‘keep in step’ with the Spirit daily?
  • What does it truly mean to say, ‘Jesus is Lord’ in your daily life? How does this declaration affect your decisions, priorities, and ability to walk in the Spirit?
  • Pastor Chip shared that walking in the Spirit involves prayer, devotion, worship, community, and being a “doer” of God’s Word. Which of these areas comes naturally to you? Which one do you need to grow in?

Take Home 2: Walking in the Spirit bears fruit that helps us with our emotional regulation (Gal. 5:22-23)

  • How does walking in the Spirit contribute to creating a church community where people feel safe, valued, and supported?
  • How do the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) impact the way you regulate your emotions?
  • How does being in a community where people are walking in the Spirit help you feel emotionally safe? Have you experienced this kind of community before?

Take Home 3: Walking in the Spirit helps us emotionally regulate as we experience true freedom (Gal. 5:1a)

  • In what ways do people—believers included—still live in emotional or spiritual bondage even though they have been set free?
  • How does true freedom in Christ shift our focus from self-centeredness to sacrificial service?
  • Acts 10:38 describes how Jesus, anointed by the Holy Spirit, went about doing good and healing others. What does this teach us about the connection between being Spirit-led and serving others?
  • What does it look like to live in true freedom while still being emotionally responsible and Spirit-led?
