Jesus was too late.
Jairus's faith is tested.
By the time Jesus arrived at Jairus’s home, every fact seemed to point toward hopelessness. The crushing crowd had delayed them. News had come that Jairus’s daughter was dead. Professional mourners filled the house with weeping and wailing. As far as everyone could see, Jesus was too late.
When Jesus declared that the child was only sleeping, the people laughed at Him. They understood the reality of the situation—but they did not understand the power of the One standing before them.
Faith does not require us to ignore the facts or pretend that our circumstances are different than they are. Faith acknowledges the facts while trusting what Jesus can still do in spite of them. Jesus entered the room, took the girl by the hand, and brought her back to life.
But what is our faith truly resting in? Is it in a particular outcome, an object, or something we desperately want? Or is our faith in Jesus—the One who is greater than our circumstances, our disappointments, and even death itself?
