Chasing Salvation: Battling Spiritual Insecurity

In week five of First Things, Pastor Chip tackles the topic of spiritual insecurity.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

General:

Have you ever felt like you were destined for something greater than what you have achieved or where you have settled?

  • In John‬ ‭13‬:‭17‬, Jesus says: “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” Take a moment of self-reflection: What Scripture or teachings do you know but aren't doing or living out in your life?
  • Prior to this message, what would you have said “washings” were in Heb. 6:2? Has this message changed the way you would have interpreted this passage? How so?
  • Prior to this message, how would you answer the question, “How are you made right with God?”
  • Have you ever doubted or questioned whether you have eternal life? How assured are you of your salvation?
  • Do you ever find yourself trying to earn your salvation? Are there certain things that you try to add to make you right with God (good works, self-righteousness, purity, etc.)?
  • Read Eph. 2:1-10. What does this passage reveal about the state of humanity? What does this passage reveal about God? How should we then live our lives based on this passage?
  • What types of “works” do you see as a result of your Christian life? What types of fruit does your life produce as a Christ follower?
  • Take Home 1: We need to get past eternal insecurity (Heb 6:1)

    • Are you a follower of Jesus? Do you believe he is the only way to the Father (John 14:6)? Think about the moment you decided to follow Him.
    • Do you have a desire to please God?
    • Is your conscience captivated by the Word of God?
    • Does sinning bother you?

Take Home 2: We need to once and for all see the importance of the church (Heb 6:2)

    • Do you ever try to do church on your own? Do you ever forsake the gathering of saints (Heb. 10:24-25)?
    • What substitutes (if any) have you used to replace Church?
    • Have you ever been hurt or abused by someone in church in your past (a pastor, a Christian brother/sister, a hypocrite, a gossiper, etc.)?
    • How do you react to the statement that Pastor Chip quoted: “The church is a whore, but she's my mother.”

Take Home 3: We need to appreciate why the writer has written this letter (Heb 13:1-14)

    • In what way(s) have you settled in your life as a Christ follower?
    • Do you see Christianity as an “escape” just to get to heaven? Or is life with Christ more about fulfilling a God-given purpose to bring heaven to earth as a “rescue mission”?
    • How can you remember "you are much more than you have become” throughout the week ahead?
