Faith in God Beyond Doubt

In week three of First Things, Pastor Chip enforces the importance of full trust in God.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

General:

  • Prior to hearing this message, how would you define or explain “faith”? How might that definition have been changed or challenged?
  • What would you say your faith based on?
  • How may "dead works" (remember this from last week’s message) affect your faith?
  • Hebrews 11:1 says that faith is the foundation on which our future hope rests. What are some “foundational” things in your life? What supports or upholds you?
  • Take some time to read through all of Hebrews 11 and notice the repeated words “by faith” to describe several believers from the past. How are these faithful people examples of waiting with patience? What gave them the ability to persevere?
  • “Without faith, it is impossible to please Him…” (Hebrews 11:6) What things do you do in your own strength to try to please God?
  • What's your plan to "grow your faith" after hearing this message?

Take Home 1: Faith is being convinced the world is not an accident or random occurrence (Heb. 11:3)

  • Do you look at the beauty and design in this world and see God? Share some examples.
  • Have you ever felt like you were an accident/purposeless?
  • What’s keeping you from believing that you are loved or that you have value?

Take Home 2: Faith is more than just a simple belief, it is relational trust (Heb. 11:6)

  • Reflect on your relationship with God. What word would you use to define that relationship? (Intimate? Distant? Fractured? Worshipful? Constant? Random?)
  • Have you ever tried to make a "deal” with God? If so, what was it?
  • What is one way that you can grow in your relationship with God this week?

Take Home 3: Faith is believing God's Word in the face of everything in life telling us a different story (Heb. 11:1)

  • How can you maintain your faith when in the midst of the storms of life?
  • What would it look like for you to exhibit “child-like faith”?
  • What is one specific thing that you can do to try to exhibit child-like faith this week?

Take Home 4: Faith is knowing God rewards those who seek Him

  • What “rewards” are you looking for from your Christian faith?
  • Do you see the Lord as enough for you or do you long for more and/or other things? Why?

Take Home 5: Faith is having assurance that God's promises will unfold

  • Are there any giants in your life that have caused you to lose faith?
  • What would you be brave enough to do/attempt if you knew you could not fail?
  • In regard to God’s promises, what verse or passages from Scripture come to mind?

Take Home 6: Faith grows when we study God's character (Rom. 15:4)

  • What is your motivation for studying Scripture?
  • What’s one thing you can do this week to spend time studying/learning about God’s character?
