Genuine Repentance

In week two of First Things, Pastor Chip dives deeper into the true meaning and importance of Genuine Repentance.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

Week Two — Heb. 6:1

General:

  • What causes the most tension in your life when you hear the Big Idea for this Series: How we live > What we know?
  • Pastor Chip suggests that Christianity is more about transformation than it is about knowledge. What transformation have you experienced in your Christian life recently?
  • Prior to hearing this message, how would you define or explain "repentance"?
  • Do you ever find yourself trying to earn your salvation? Are there certain things that you elevate in your life that you believe make you right with God?
  • Re-read Eph 2:1-10. What does this passage tell you about yourself? What does this passage tell you about God?
  • How does this message change or add to your understanding of what salvation is and how we receive it?
  • What "dead works" in your life are deceiving you in your relationship with Jesus?
  • What are some next steps that you can apply to your life after hearing this message?

Take Home 1: Have I ever truly had a

genuine, honest "come to Jesus" moment of repentance?

  • When examining your life (attitude, relationships, desires, etc.), what do you give your allegiance to?
  • Are there some places in your life that may require a change of allegiance?
  • Think about the time you decided to repent and follow Jesus. How did you feel at that time? Has your perspective towards life changed since then? Are you as excited/inspired to live for Jesus as you were in that moment?

Take Home 2: Are there some things in my life that I know I need to repent of right now?

  • Is there anything that comes to mind that you need to make right with Jesus?
  • How do you respond to sin in your own life?

Take Home 3: Am I willing to put the things of God first in my life?

  • What are some things that you put before God?
  • When you think about the “things of God” (prayer, Scripture reading, Christian living, etc.), what feelings come to mind? Excitement? Disdain? Apathy? Indifference? Passion?
