Growing your faith maturity

In the first week of First Things, Pastor Chip hits on how important it is to grow in maturity in our faith, and not stay on the first things.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

Week One — Heb. 5:11-6:3

General:

  • In reference to the story that Pastor Chip told at the beginning of the message, what is an example of a "BIG Rock" that you had to deal with in your life before you could move on? (i.e., Relationship, career, finances, marriage, etc.?
  • What do you believe are the ‘first things’ we need in our lives as Christians?
  • What does Christianity mean to you?
  • “How we live is more important than what we know.” Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Give an example from your life where this was played out. What was the outcome?
  • Can you remember a time in your life when how somebody lived mattered more than what they knew?
  • How has your life been transformed by Christ in the most recent season of your life?
  • Where in the American church do we tend to say one thing, but do another?
  • Do you ever find yourself longing for your old way of life before you started following Christ?

Take Home 1: We must be diligent in making sure we are not dull of hearing (Heb. 2:1, 5:11b)

  • How can we ‘pay attention’ and be sure that we are not dull of hearing?
  • Do we (do you) even have a holy fear anymore? Do we (do you) desperately want to please God?
  • What does it mean to have a holy fear of God to you?
  • Take a moment to ask God to search your heart. Is there any particular place where you've become dull of hearing in your Christian life?

Take Home 2: The distinguishing mark of maturity is morality (Heb. 5:14)

  • How would you define your morality? What is your moral compass?
  • What does a mature Christian look like to you?
  • Do we (do you) love the truth or simply “our” version of it?
  • Reread 2 Thes. 2:10-12. How does this make you feel?

Take Home 3: We need to go back and visit/revisit and/or learn/ relearn the first things (Heb. 6:1-2)

  • When it comes to our spiritual growth and development, what steps can you take to receive ‘solid food’ today?
  • What are the things that you feel you need to revisit or relearn?
  • On a scale of 1-10, how well do you understand and live out what Scripture teaches? What is one step you can take this week to move that score higher?
