Breaking Bad Habits

In week 5 Pastor Ray Dick dives into breaking the bad habits that define us, and why we should shift our identity on Jesus.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

General:

  • What is your “smelly hockey gear” that you keep putting on?
  • What habits do you have in your life that keep you from living like Jesus?
  • What do I struggle with most in my identity?
  • Take a moment and reflect on your behavior, reactions, and habits over the week. If the root of your behavior is your heart, what do you think is going on in your heart?
  • What parts of your dreams, desires, and emotions are rooted in Jesus? What parts may not be?
  • Of the 4 steps that Pastor Ray draws out, which step do you need to focus on this season of your life? (Seek Jesus? Think like Jesus? Act like Jesus? Resist like Jesus?) Which one (or two or three) do you find most difficult to follow?

Take Home 1: Seek Jesus (Col. 3:1,3)

  • What would making Jesus “the Big Idea” of your life” look like?
  • What’s one thing you can do to make Jesus the center of your life?

Take Home 2: Think like Jesus (Col. 3:2)

  • Reflect on your thoughts over the last week. What do you set your mind on?
  • Are there secret thoughts that you have? Do you think Jesus would think those things?
  • When was the last time you rejoiced over a victory in your life, instead of still thinking about what you’re lacking?

Take Home 3: Act like Jesus (Col. 3:5-8)

  • In what ways are you "trapped" in your old self? What is keeping you from ridding yourself of the some of the old self and completely putting on / authentically wearing your new self?
  • In Col. 3, Paul tells us to put these practices to death. Which of these habits/behaviors in this passage do you struggle with?
  • What is the difference between trying to fix the old self vs. embracing the new   self? Do you spend more time trying to fix your old self or do you spend more of your focus on living like Christ?
  • What could it look like for you to “put on love” (Col. 3:14)?

Take Home 4: Resist like Jesus

  • In what ways do you feel tempted to go back to that old life?
  • What temptations are in your life (what is your bait)?
  • What passage of Scriptures can you memorize/meditate on to help you personally resist temptation?
