Finding yourself

In the first week of Identity Crisis, Pastor Chip tackles the topic of finding our true Identity.

Dive deeper into the message with these discussion questions!

Week One — Mark 5:1-17

General:

  • How do you naturally answer the question, ‘Who am I?’ How do you view yourself? Where do you find your identity?
  • What is one thing people may not know about you?
  • When you think about who you are, do you tend to look within or outside of yourself?
  • Our culture says, “you’re perfect just the way you are.” How does Pastor Chip’s message challenge this concept?
  • The enemy uses many means to distract us from sharing the Gospel just like the storm (Mk. 4:35-41) gripped the disciples with fear. What is your greatest obstacle that gets in the way of sharing the Gospel?
  • In what way(s) can you relate to the demon-possessed man in Mark 5?
  • Jesus was intentional to seek out the demon-possessed man. Who in your life are you willing to risk (something) in order to share the Gospel?
  • Why do you think the people responded with fear when they saw the man clothed and in his right mind? How would you respond?
  • What was your biggest take-away from this weekend's message that you can apply to your life today?

Take Home 1: All the Gospels present Jesus as the answer to everyone’s situation

  • Do you see Jesus as the answer to everything?
  • “We ain’t finding him, he’s finding us” - Do you remember a time when Jesus met you were at?
  • What could Jesus heal in you?

Take Home 2: We must be willing to embrace what needs healing in us… false identities (Mk. 5:5)

  • What areas in your life are you hanging onto as false identities?
  • Our world teaches strength and autonomy, but scripture teaches weakness and community. How can you start to shift your perspective on some things to reflect scripture?

Take Home 3: Are we willing to turn to Jesus and find our true identities in Him (Mk. 5:15)

  • How often do you ask Jesus to leave (like the townspeople) rather than inviting Him into your situation (like the man who was healed)? How can you be more like the healed man in this story?
  • What would it look like to find your identity in Him rather than in other things?
  • How can you be transformed by the renewal of your mind this week (Romans 12:1-2)?
